Mauna Kea field trip - July/August 2010
 Posted - 03/04/2010 :  11:28:41 PM
         By TomK
Due to what some might call a "fluid situation" I can't offer a guided tour to Mauna Kea's summit plus a telescope or two until this summer. I might be able to offer one in July or August this year though.

I wish I could offer an earlier date but don't think it'll be possible.

Let me know if you're interested and I'll come up with specific dates as soon as I can, and don't believe anyone who says UKIRT will close this year or anytime soon...

Good to hear you have some security for a while.

If/When I ever get time... I'm so down for one of these Mauna Kea trips.

Thanks again Tk

I wish I could say more about the future of UKIRT but can't right now. The news is mixed at the moment but as I said don't believe anyone who says it'll close this year as the situation seems to be changing week by week.

I'm glad to hear that the news is at least that good.

The latest news about UKIRT is now available on its home page - UKIRT. We've gone from the STFC wanting to close us next month (April 2010) to now operating until at least March 2012.

The news doesn't include any details about the possibility of potential partners putting in significant amounts of money to get observing time on the telescope but those possibilities exist and may well change the outlook even more! It probably isn't right for me to comment much more about this at the moment though.

I hope TMT isn't putting any pressure on other telescopes at all.

I really hope you are looking at a possible job with TMT if it happens.

I have a few numbers ... (Like you probably don't have the more important ones... LOL)

I don't think the TMT is putting any pressure on the other telescopes at all - we all do different things and specialize in different areas. What's putting pressure on telescopes right now is simply funding due to the financial crisis (it's not just UKIRT).

I'm interested to know what numbers you're talking about.

I have phone numbers and emails to a few folks that have/were/are pushing the TMT project.

Pretty much just paid consultants that probably are just hired PR folks.

I misunderstood - I didn't think you meant phone numbers! It's OK, I have some fairly reasonable contacts!
