More News Like This    Mauna Kea field trip - July/August 2010  Posted - 03/04/2010 :  11:28:41 PM          By TomK Due to what some might call a "fluid situation" I can't offer a guided tour to Mauna Kea's summit plus a telescope or two until this summer. I might be able to offer one in July or August this year though. I wish I could offer an earlier date but don't think it'll be possible. Let me know if you're interested and I'll come up with specific dates as soon as I can, and don't believe anyone who says UKIRT will close this year or anytime soon... We've gone from the STFC wanting to close us next month (April 2010) to now operating until at least March 2012. The news doesn't include any details about the possibility of potential partners putting in significant amounts of money to get observing time on the telescope but those possibilities exist and may well change the outlook even more! It probably isn't right for me to comment much more about this at the moment though. What's putting pressure on telescopes right now is simply funding due to the financial crisis (it's not just UKIRT). I'm interested to know what numbers you're talking about.
